Can I choose a family member as my respite caregiver?

Is there a cost to the family for CalAIM Respite Care?
CalAIM Respite Care is covered as a Community Supports benefit through member’s Medi-Cal Managed Care Plan — at no out-of-pocket cost to the family. Authorization is required from the health plan, and 24 Hour Home Care assists with the entire authorization process.
Does the member need to be enrolled in IHSS to qualify?
No — IHSS enrollment is not required for CalAIM Respite Care eligibility. The primary requirements are active Medi-Cal managed care enrollment and a demonstrated need for caregiver relief.
Can respite care be used alongside other Community Supports services?
Yes. Respite Care hours are in addition to support hours the member is authorized for, allowing families to build a comprehensive care arrangement.
How many hours of respite care are available per year?
The CalAIM program authorizes up to 336 hours of respite care annually. Health plans may approve exceptions to the annual cap based on clinical need.
